Soccer in Times Square?

Quando se busca por "New York, NY" no Google Maps, o software exibe um ponto bem no Times Square, região central de Manhattan. É lá que a gente vai assistir a final da "Copa das Confederações", entre a seleção brasileira e os Estados Unidos. Eu nunca "dei muita bola" pra este campeonato e por aqui está longe de atrair multidões. Quando estivemos neste mesmo local na copa de 2006 (na Alemanha), só mesmo os "estrangeiros" prestavam atenção no campeonato.

De lá pra cá algumas coisas mudaram, mas a paixão dos americanos pelo "futebol" ainda é a mesma: quase nenhuma. Baseball, Football, Basketball, Ice Hockey e até "Golf" têm mais destaque. De qualquer maneira os jornais daqui noticiaram o fato dos EUA terem batido a Espanha, atual número 1 no ranking da Fifa. Para qualquer brasileiro que se preze só existe um critério para o ranking: colocação em todas as copas do mundo. E se algum dia alguém alcançar o Brasil, o critério muda para "seleção que participou de todas as copas". Porque não há nada mais brasileiro que ser exceção.

Highly recommended: Food, Inc. Pra fazer pensar sobre nossos hábitos e seu legado... Aqui apenas 3 salas de cinema estão exibindo, todas no circuito "alternativo". Talvez porque os maiores patrocinadores destas salas estão na indústria alimentícia?

Ao meu ver este documentário tratou muito bem o assunto. Apesar dos pesares, traz uma mensagem otimista e mostra a "salvação" através da óbvia, mas difícil, mudança de hábito. Envolva-se você também!

The shares will no longer trade on the New York Stock Exchange beginning on Tuesday. But the stock is likely to trade, in a limited fashion, on the Pink Sheets, an electronic quotation system for companies that do not meet the listing standards for the stock exchanges.

Most shareholders are typically wiped out in bankruptcy, financial planners said, which is why G.M. stockholders should probably dump their shares if they can. Warren F. McIntyre, a financial planner in Troy, Mich., said that many people “don’t realize that usually a new share class is issued and the holders of the old shares are wiped out.”

But getting rid of the stock may be difficult, and if you have too few shares, the brokerage commission alone may wipe out any proceeds from the sale.

If you have the actual stock certificates, you might try to sell them on eBay. You may be able to get more for them as collector’s items. It’s worth a shot.

Working on Labour Day

Nos EUA, no "Dia do Trabalho"... trabalha-se! Aqui comemora-se na primeira segunda-feira de Setembro, primeiro de maio é como um outro dia qualquer (da mesma maneira que a terça-feira de carnaval ou a quarta-feira de cinzas, mas isso já é outra história). Melhor, pior? Diferente. Pra mim o feriado era bacana porque era no dia seguinte ao meu aniversário. Por outro lado a legislacao americana permite tirar apenas um dia de férias, não há um número mínimo de dias. Com um pouco de planejamento dá pra aproveitar melhor o tempo livre... afinal de contas é pra isso que se trabalha, não?

O inverno se despediu de NY hoje de manhã com neve. Ou flurry, pra ser mais preciso. Senti até um pouco de saudades do branquinho acumulado em cima dos carros, o contraste com o aslfalto.
